Chapter 9 - Personalising Windows

Making changes to the way you use Windows is easy through the use of the Control Panels. These allow you to personalise the computer to suit your needs. There are many controls available for your use. We'll use just some of them.

The Control Panels

Accessibility Options: Keyboard, mouse, and display settings to aid users with special needs.

Add New Hardware: Used to automatically detect new hardware or pick from a list.

Add/Remove Programs: Setup new software.

Date/Time: Allows you to simply pick a time zone, then set the internal clock.

Install: remove, view, or sort fonts.

Joystick: Install or configure game adapters.

Keyboard: Set language, blink, and repeat rates.

Modems: Install drivers for a modem and configure communication options.

Mouse: Options include trails and animated cursors.

Multimedia: All of your sound and video settings for multimedia are here.

Network: Add, remove, and configure network components and services.

Passwords: Multiuser settings and passwords for individual users.

Printers: Shortcut to printers in My Computer (see above).

Regional Settings: Set up currency values, decimals, date and time styles.

Sounds: Changes system and program sounds.

System: Provides system information and advanced settings.

Changing your Display

It's easy to change the look of your Window's screen. You'll find a range of different looks already built into Windows 95.

Do this:

Left click on the Start Menu.

Drag to Settings.

Drag to Control Panel.

Left Click.

The Control Panels windows should open.

Find the Display icon.

Double click on it.

A dialog box called Display Properties will open.

Across the top, you will see some tabs labelled Background, Screen Saver, Appearance and Settings      

                                                                                                                                                

Changing the Wallpaper

Do this:

Click on the Background tab.

Choose a Background by scrolling up and down the Wallpaper list.

Click on the name of a Wallpaper.

Click on the Display: Tile check button.

Click on the Apply button to see what your Desktop will look like.

If you wish to choose a different Wallpaper and try it, repeat the previous steps.

Click the Cancel button to leave without making changes.

Click the OK button to keep the wallpaper and exit the dialog box.

 

To Change the Pattern

Do this:

Open the Display control panel.

Click on the Background tab.

Choose None in the Wallpaper list by scrolling up to the top.

Choose a background by scrolling up and down the Pattern list.

Click on the name of a Pattern.

Click on the Apply button to see what your Desktop will look like.

If you wish to choose a different pattern and try it, repeat the previous steps.

Click the Cancel button to leave without making changes.

Click the OK button to keep the pattern and exit the dialog box.

 

Changing the Screensaver

Do this:

Open the Display control panel.

Click on the Screensaver tab.

Click on the arrow next to the screensaver pull down list.

Drag to the Screensaver you wish to use.

An example can be seen in the monitor in the middle of the dialog box.

Click on the Preview button to see it working.

Move the mouse to return to the dialog box.

Adjust the Wait time until the screensaver starts by clicking on the arrows to the right of the Wait: box.

Click the Cancel button to leave without making changes.

Click the Apply button to change to your new screensaver settings.

Click the OK buttons to leave the dialog box.

 

Changing the Overall Appearance of Windows

Do this:

Open the Display control panel.

Click on the Appearance tab.

Choose a new look from the Scheme pull down list.

An example can be seen in the middle of the dialog box.

You also have the option of choosing your own settings.

Click the Cancel button to leave without making changes.

Click the Apply button to change to your new scheme settings.

Click the OK buttons to exit the dialog box.                 

                   

Changing the Taskbar Settings

You can make some changes to the way the Taskbar acts and what you see upon it.

 

To open the Taskbar settings.

Do this:

Click on the Start Menu.

Drag to Settings.

Drag out to Taskbar.

Click.

By clicking in the box next to the option, you can activate that function.

Always on top - This keeps the Taskbar at the front of the Desktop even a window is placed over it. The window will appear behind the Taskbar.

Auto hide - When the pointer is not over the Taskbar, it slides down out of view. If the pointer is moved back over where the Taskbar should be, it comes back into view.

Show small icons in Start Menu - This makes the size of the icons in the Start Menu smaller than usual. This keeps the Start Menu shorter.

Show clock - This places the time in the bottom right hand corner of the Taskbar. This allows you to keep an eye on the time without looking up from the computer.

 

To Operate the Taskbar functions

Do this:

Click in the box next to the function you wish to activate or deactivate.

Click on the Apply button.

When you have made your changes, click the OK button.

 

Changing the Time and Date

Do this:

Right click on the time in the right corner of the Taskbar.

Drag to Adjust Date/Time.

 

Changing the Month

Do this:

Click on the arrow to the right of the box which shows the month.

Drag to the correct month.                    

                                              

Changing the Year

Do this:

Click on the up or down arrow to the right of the box which shows the year.

Clicking the up button moves the year forward e.g. 1998, 1999, 2000.

Clicking the down button moves the year backwards e.g. 1998, 1997, 1996.

 

Changing the Day

Do this:

Click on the day in the Calendar.

 

Changing the Time

Do this:

Click on the up or down arrow to the right of the box which shows the time.

Double click on the hour, minute or second part of the display to change it.

Clicking the up button moves the time forward e.g. 6, 7, 8:00:00

Clicking the down button moves the time backwards e.g. 8, 7, 6:00:00

Do this:

Click the OK button to make the changes happen.

Click the Cancel button to close the dialog window without changes.

 

Adjusting the Volume

Do this:

Right click on the Speaker icon in the far right of the Taskbar.

Drag to Open Volume Controls.

Left click.

A new window will open.

Drag the slide in the Volume Control box up or down to adjust the volume.

Click on the Options menu.

Drag to Exit and click.

 

To Clear all Open Windows from the Screen

Do this:

Right click on a blank space within the Taskbar.

Drag to Minimise All Windows.

Click

 

Free Windows Programs

Windows 95 comes with a selection of programs included. These are some of them:

Notepad - The Notesite is a small word processorr which can be used for short letters or for taking notes. It doesn't allow formatting of the file..

Calculator - The Calculator works just like a normal calculator. You can click on the buttons or use your number keys on the right side of the keyboard to work out your sums. It even has a memory for storing your calculations.

Paint - The Paint program is a simple drawing program which has a selection of brushes, pencils, paints and effects. You can draw simple drawings or even make changes to clip art before using it in one of your files.

WordPad - WordPad is a more powerful word processor with many of the basic tools that you need to write your day to day letters. It offers styles such as bold and underline, and the ability to change the font you are using.

CD Player - With CD Player, an audio CD can be played in the CD-ROM drive on your computer.

MS-DOS Prompt - Start DOS-based programs from the command prompt within a MS-DOS window.

Disk Defragmenter - Use Disk Defragmenter to optimise your disk so that the files and unused space are arranged neatly. This makes your programs run faster and open more quickly.

Scandisk - Use Scandisk to check the hard disk for errors and to fix problems that are found
