Chapter 6 - Getting Help It is very difficult to remember how to use all of the features of Windows 95. If you forget how to do something, Windows has an in built help program to remind you. The online help program is a big manual containing all the information you might need. You can use the contents, index or search dialog box for that information . Contents Opening Help Do this: Left click on the Start Menu. Drag to Help. Left click. A window called Help Topics will appear.
Using the Contents When the Help window opens, it will show six topics. Four of them have icons of sites next to them. Each site has a different name. To find help, you have to choose a site title which relates to your question. If you wish to know how to make a new folder, you'll need to choose the site called How To... Do this Left click on the Start Menu. Drag to Help. Left click. A window called Help Topics will appear. Move the pointer over a site icon which is related to your topic. Double click the left mouse button to expand it. A new series of sites should appear. Move the pointer over the site icon next closest topic in this list. Double click Look for the file which answers your question. Double click on the icon next to it. The instructions showing how to solve your problem will now appear in a new window called Windows Help. Close the window by clicking on the Close button.
Using the Index When you are looking for a specific topic it is generally quicker to use the index to search. As you type the word you're looking for into the index, it will scroll through the alphabetical list until it finds the word you have typed. Do this: Left click on the Start Menu. Drag to Help. Left click. A window called Help Topics will appear. Left click on the tab named Index. A new dialog box will appear showing words in alphabetical order (if you haven't run the Help Index before, the computer may take a minute to compose the index). In the box numbered 1, start to type in the topic you need help with. You will see the second box scrolling through to match the words as you type the letters. When you see the entry you are looking for, left click on it to highlight it. Click the button named Display to see the Help file. A new window called Windows Help will appear. Close the window when you've read it.
Add a Program Shortcut to the Desktop If you have a program that you often use, it is sometimes quicker to start it by placing a program shortcut on the Desktop. By double-clicking on this shortcut icon, your program will start. Many programs, when installed, will automatically place a shortcut icon on the Desktop. If you don't wish to use these, drag them to the Recycle Bin. Do this: Right click on the Desktop. Drag to New. Drag to Shortcut in the Submenu. In the Create Shortcut dialog box, left click the Browse button. You will create a shortcut for the Calculator. In the Browse dialog box, scroll to the right until you see the Folder called Windows. Move the pointer over the Windows folder icon. Double click on the icon or left click on the icon and click the Open button in the dialog box. Scroll to the right in the folders window until you see the Calculator icon. Double click on the icon or left click on the Calculator icon and click the Open button in the dialog box. The Create Shortcut dialog box will reappear. Left click on Next. Type in a new name or use the one chosen by Windows. Left click on the Finish button. A shortcut icon will now appear on the Desktop. You can tell it is a shortcut because it has an arrow in the corner. Double click on the icon to start the Calculator.
Rename a Shortcut Do this: Move the pointer over the icon. Right click on it. Drag to Rename. Left click. Type in the new name. Press the Enter key.
Delete a Shortcut from the Desktop Method 1 Do this: Left click, hold and drag the shortcut icon to the Recycle Bin. When the Bin goes dark, release the mouse button. Method 2 Right click on the shortcut icon. Drag to Delete. Left click. In the dialog box that appears, left click on the Yes button.
